Gasket questions

Well, thanks to an inept Ebayer, I'm scrapping my project for the 17" wheel conversion this year. Moron said the rim was for a FZR1000, but turns out it's a rim off a late model (97+) YZF. Going to relist it and to try and get some of my money back. Idiots!!!!

Anyway, I've decided to turn my focus onto the engine instead since I'm working with a limited budget this year. The top of the cylinder head has a slow oil leak, which looks to be from a worn out gasket. Only real problem is trying to figure out if it's the valve cover gasket that's leaking, or if it's one of the lower gaskets on the head.

I popped the valve cover off last weekend, and it looked to still be in decent shape. Bolts seemed to still be tight, but they may have loosened up a bit over the years to allow the leak. One question I had was if there is supposed to be a gasket sealant used when you put it on. The gasket pulled right off when I got the cover removed.

It's not that I'm overly concerned about tearing the head down further, but I'm worried about having the proper tools for doing so - mainly in dealing with the cam chain tensioner. I know there is a special adapter as well for getting the crank to turn, but where's the best (and cheapest) place to get one? Honestly I just can't afford to spend $100+ in tools (since I'm saving up for school this summer) along with the parts I'm going to need. Trying to clean the carbs up as well, but again I'm worried about going too far with them since I don't have a carb sync tool.

Any tips or advice on the best way to proceed with this?

I use a little dab of Yamabond on each half moon at the cam ends. That's it
While I was in there though I would check the valve clearance, Turn the motor over by pulling the plugs and using the rear wheel...No need for a special tool. Borrow a torque wrench and retorque the head bolts. That'll most likely cure your little oil leak.

You only need a YZF swingarm for this YZF wheel . Shorter wheelbase and stronger then a FZR swingarm.

Nate on my 88 fzr1000 to turn crank I pull sparkplugs, remove the l/h crank cover (retained by 3 c/s phillips screws) and screw in a 8mm 1.25 bolt w/pal nut til I have good penetration (heh heh), into crank, lock pal nut and turn bolt to rotate crankshaft. special tools- no charge. G.
