You don't set your cam timing by the teeth on the cam sprocket and the cam chain, it's alittle bit more complicated than that.

You will need slotted cam sprockets, a degree wheel, your cam's lift, duration and lobe centers, the "book" timing and the "actual" timing of the cams and then you play with it from there.
It's always a good thing to remove the head and use plasticine or clay to see if you are going to have piston/valve problems.

Your pistons, valve timing, cam specs, carb settings and exhaust work together.
If you change one thing you are going to effect how everthing works together.

I am not even going to attempt to explain how to set cam timing or give out specs on an open forum board.
Your best bet would be to contact an engine builder who is willing to share some of his knowledge.

Timing

Post by ChuckD »

I hide those #'s like my titles to my vehicles. This knowledge is not just some pick it out of the book #. Each degree on each cam has a different effect and most of these #'s are obtained from years of R&D and a few blown engines. If you really want power from one of these engines, the cam timing is the only way to go. The FZR does not have some offset timing advancer, the only way to get your cams done right, is find a local shop that is very confident in doing this and if they have the knowledge to back it up. Don't let some Kawi hack tell you about how to tune a 5 valve, it's a whole different game. If all else fails, give me buzz and we can talk more from there.
CHUCK D.

I should have said "find a mechanic who is willing to part with his knowledge for money".

What part of the country are you located in?
I recomend Kurt Jordan if you are near California.

Kawa hack? I learned how to degre cams on my GpZ1100. And I didn't blow up any engines.
