Where to go for Cylinder Bore/Hone? Piston Kits? Gaskets?

Post by KontoBoy »

I'm freshening the motor on a '99 XT350 (single cylinder, air cooled). It was a theft recovery bike I picked up cheap cheap--left outside with manifolds off and developed rust in the cylinder that froze the piston.

I figure I need to have the cylinder bored and honed.

Any recommendations for a good shop that can bore the cylinder for me? I'm in the DC area but can ship. How much should I expect to pay?

Also looking for a piston kit for same. I see stock, 1, 1.5 and .04 mm Wiseco kits on eBay starting at about $90. Anyone know where I can beat that price (Chuck D.)? Should I go with the .04 over?

Finally, any recommendations on gasket kits, Vesrah, Cometic, other?

Thanks and please excuse the dirt bike post on ths forum.

Hi Konto, one of the most tursted guys I use has been in the industry for a while, http://hfd1motorsports.com/index.html a guy named Charlie. Just had a chat with him and he knows where you can get it done, wether it is plated or not. Hope this helps :)

Ended up going with a local machine shop. $67 for 1mm/.040 bore and hone, Wiesco piston kit on eBay was $94 with shipping. It's a single cylinder XT350 enduro teach my kids to ride and future pit bike.

I should have it back in a week.

Any recommendations inexpensive on a valve spring compressor for these bikes?

I must be getting old--I used that shop about 10 years ago to mill a warped auto cylinder head. Forgot it was still there. The whole neighborhood changed so much (yuppie town) I was surpriseed it was still there. Talked to the owner who must be in his 70's about all the changes. He has a young guy working for him and all the business he can handle (mostly automotive).

Thanks to all
