Budget special

Post by cromwelluk »

Finally got the YZF750 finished a couple of months ago and is running well only problem is with the front brake still does not seem right no matter how many times I bleed it , and my son is enjoying the FZ750.a bit more powerful than his rgv250.
So wiith the winter on the horizon my new project is set to start to keep me busy during the cold winter months.
I have a collection of parts but do not know where to start, looking for a light weight 750 6 speed with the power of a 1000
I am aware of the FZ750 with the 88/89 1000 barrels and pistons to give a 911 cc but note shure which head to use as I have a YZF750 available

I thought I could do the came with the YZF750 with the exup 1000 barrels but it would appear It is only the same as a big bore kit 840 cc or similar

So one again a plee for help I have some FZ750 . FZR 1000 genisis, yzf 750 engines / parts plus the exup barrels & pistons for the YZF conversion
given the available parts how would you put them together for the best gains
I know it a bit vague but thats my problem
Will a FZ 911 cc beat a yzf 840 etc

pls advise before I spend any silly (my ) money

from what I've learned here on the forum the FZR1000 engine is basically the same as the YZF1000 engine.
I believe the top end is different though so I would use the YZF top end.
Another thing I just learned is that the FZR header is better than the YZF header, the FZR header is of bigger diameter and lighter than the YZF.
I would use the newer carbs from the YZF as well.
One thing with the YZF is that it consume some oil apparently the bore isn't 100% round on them.
Most guys tend to go with the Wiseco 1040 kit to get this sorted out.
The guy to give the best advice will be Jim dragracer and i'm sure he will let you know the best combo for you.
My 97 YZF1000 has 28k km on it and doesn't drink much oil unless I ran it hard.

frame -

the ow01 frame was identical to the 89-90 fzr1000 frame EXCEPT additional casting material at the front where the fork shaft goes thru to decrease flex

I would venture to guess that the yzf frame is desirable due to the reduction in weight..... Too bad owo1 isn't here he could post his opinion as he owns both but he's away.

the lower end of the yzf1000 motor had less reciprocating mass than its predecessor 89-95 fzr1000 motor so I would opt for the yzf motor

YZF 750 / 1000 parts

Post by cromwelluk »

First of all can Ad-min change the header as the more I see the more it embarrasses me, to something more apt please !!!!!!!!!!!! (Thanks in advance)

Guys
Thanks for the feedback,

It’s took a long time but I think I know what I am looking for in broad terms.
Which will be 2 long term ongoing projects.

If ow01 frame was identical / similar to the 89-90 fzr1000 then I would us the YZF 750 bike & frame.
Also it’s the next generation bike and should be better.
Project 1
My YZF 750 handles well feels comfortable. Look’s good if slightly dated, and I have one so its a good starting point, Just need’s a little more power
Already tried the FZR 1000 Exup option and of the 2 bike I prefer the Standard YZF 750 mainly for the 6 speed box, also its lighter & more nimble.
So I would like to modify a YZF 750 engine probably with a 1000 Exup top end, As I have the barrels and pistons in stock
Just need to find the best head, cams, headers, or even if its worth using the YZF1000r crank etc

Project 2
I have a special 1985 FZ750 engine based race bike which I have had for a few years and did not really know what to do with it,
Once again it has took some time but I am going to put it on the road and ride a piece of history.
It will get more use and I will enjoy it more.
I thought of fitting my spare YZF 750 engine to preserve the original motor, this is an easy option and I have all the parts.
Eventually I would like a FZ911cc just because I fancy one !!!!!. but whatever the outcome it needs to be within FZ 750 engine cases

So in the end both project will be similar I want to keep a sensible budget to get a fast road / track based bike with a strong reliable motor

Also What are the main differences between the FZR1000 exup and the YZF1000r as it is a tuned FZR motor ( I thought it had lightened internals but the main changes were head based with narrower ports)

So thanks to E-bay there are parts a plenty its just a case of knowing what to look for

As always any advice welcome

Crommie
