Formattting ex-RAID 0 Drives...

Ok for you computer types out there, here's my problem...:

I have two 80GB HDD from a RAID 0 set up but I cannot format them anymore due to a number of reasons, main one being I no longer have a RAID set up in my new computer!!! So I have these two HDDs and have inserted one of them into an external caddy (USB cable) but cannot read it at all or even 'see' them on the new machine. I get an error message saying "USB Device Not Recognised", however there is power to the caddy as I can hear the drive whirring away...

How do I force Vista to 'see' this drive so I can format it to NTFS? I have tried the Disk Management tools but there is no unlisted drives appearing.

Cheers,

Dave

It sounds like it needs to load the drivers for the USB device. Have you got admin priviledge with the user Id you log on with?

Is there a way of connecting it straight to the motherboard having the case open and using sata or ribbon cable. This should prove wether the drive is OK and you should be able to format?

Also if a PATA drive check the drive jumpers for master, slave etc?....

Just my 2c

All good pointers. Set the jumper to auto select and Vista should detect it. I don't think that you would need to load any drivers since this wouldn't be any different than using an external USB drive. I've never had to use a special driver for those.

Have you contacted the drive manufacturer? They may have drives/prog. that'll handle situ's like this. Maxtor has "MaxBlast" Seagate has "SeaTools" and so on...

You'll be able to do it with a file recovery program... your 0 sector's gone, the file directory, which is why MyPC doesn't see the drive. You won't be able to format with Vista, but any of the many file recovery programs will do it.

I know no one will care anymore, but for future reference...download and burn a Gparted live CD here (follow the ISO file rules) drop into the CD tray and reboot. Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the CD before the hard disks. You will see your drives then.

Bob do you have the George Carlin Calender!?!?!?! If not....

"George's Quote of the Day"

Watching television these days, I often wonder what happened to the "vertical hold knob". I miss that feature.....

My new HD to analog converter just freezes the screen when it loses the signal. Like right now.
Gotta love that new technology..
