I wonder if it would be worth bursting this twit's bubble and telling him how much his machine is really worth? I mean, I too feel quite similar that my machine is worth way more than even that, however, I know no-one would ever pay me what I think it's actually worth, I guess that's one of the reasons why we're all keeping our bikes?

There's plenty of cars and bikes out there (including mine) that have
had much more $ spent on them than they'll ever sell for.

As to what they are "worth", it depends on who is judging.

To me,
the uniqueness and the individuality,
the confidence in knowing the motor is built right and as good as it can be,
the fun of building it and saying "I made this better than it was",
was worth spending the money on the build.

But you can't sell that feeling to someone else afterwards.
And everyone has different tastes in how they would customise.

It's also fun taking a bike which would sell for only about a month's worth
of the average wage, and using it to carve up the other guys on their
latest supersport machines.

One thing that is important to me comes from my history.
I've ridden and worked on lots of bikes, sold lots working in bike shops,
and that feeling of "special unique character or personality" that
each bike can have, seems to have faded away some.
Most of them just feel like a bunch of gears and parts and stuff
that performs well, but not particularly like it has a soul or spirit.

Remember how you felt on your first ride on your first bike?

With a bike that I have customised myself, that feeling, that the bike
is a small but meaningful part of my life and an expression
of my personality, is much more present.

That feeling also comes from shared experience with the bike,
when it has been a companion in difficult or joyous times
(like that ultimate track day, or a riding holiday across the
country, or that time you rode 500 miles in the rain
because of a girl). But these days it seems much harder to find
time for that sort of experience...

Anyway I think we all have a soft spot for our FZs, FZRs, and YZFs,
even if it is only because "that bike is MINE and noone elses"!

So here's to bikes that are made of a lump of metal, but mean
so much more to us than just transport.

That's very deep hotcam, I feel I must now go to the mountain top and meditate on those things you have shared with us all.

I can say with experience that you just can't get what you put into something. Building or rebuilding cars for years only pissed off the wife when I sold something for less than what I paid for it. I really never like to haggle over something that I wanted or needed. I just brought it and later on if I didn't need it I would sell cheaper than I got it for but, like I tell my other half, If I buy something and it saves me time and fustration then it was worth it. When it comes to selling things, someone is only going to pay what they think it is worth not what you think it is worth. Of course that could change depending on how old or rare the item is.

Damn Hotcam, I need to go sit in the garage. I have been so busy lately that I have let 2 hours of work on one bike and 20 minutes on another, etc there keep me in the house. I need to go smell my gears and get reconnected.
There is always free cheese in a mouse trap.
