Anybody got some pointers on prepping and painting race glass?? Don't need a top finish, just something that doesn't look like my 2 year old did it.

I just googled "painting race glass" and came up with this one.

I didn't read through it, just scanned over it and saw some nice pics.

patience is your friend. apply many thin coats allowing to dry for one day in between.

you can find tons of info on the wera.com bbs about painting race glass.

Bring them over and I'll teach you how to drink beer and paint.

I tend to go for a couple of coats (put on in one application) of 2k. (acrylic enamel) put on to the preped race-glass. Quite often the the race glasses gel coat is sufficient as primer. Everyone has their preferred method. I aim for the best possible finish with minimum work on race bikes.

Yes... that was a poorly executed sentence if I've ever made one... :)

Make sure ALL oils are off before painting. Use a good degreaser designed for wiping down parts before painting.

Also I do have a rule with regards to painting race vehicles.

As long as it looks good at 60mph(100kph) and 60ft (30m). :) I;ve seen some club racers our racing with I swear to God, $2000 paint jobs. Its insane to put that much money into a paint job on a vehicle thats more than likely going to get in a crash.

Same rule here, "Good from far, but far from good!"

I'm missing one step: Sanding
Building my streetfighter fairings I've spend evenings on sanding, from grid 40 all the way up to grid 1000 (don't know if outside Europe the gridsize is the same).
When building for a "rough" paintjob or expect to paint in thick layers, you can stop around grid 240.

I've applied that to my circuitbike fairings, grid 120 to get the major bumbs and scratches out, and now in the process of rattlecan painting it. Still in doubt if I should clearcoat it.

Whatever you like, but I do like the RC30 tri-colour scheme. As you have proven to be fast and not prone to crashing, it wont hurt spending a bit of time and $ on paint.

If your times keep moving in the direction you have been travelling in recently, it is inevitable that you will do more of it though... you know what page I'm on with that comment I hope :) So buy more than 500ml of each colour.... :)

I did think about the RC30 scheme...in truth no matter the quality I won't have a lot to spend on it, funds need to go to tuning and things that matter!! And yes, starting to have to push more, fell off at PI exactly because of that, really wanted to qualify well to lessen straight line deficit etc. I fell off on the 7th lap, some guys did their fastest laps on laps 8-10 as it was slowly getting less wet, had the session finished on the 7th lap I would have qualified 4th...

White is the cheapest. How about pink? No you're right... best leave that to Butler :)

Well its been white all this time so no big change there, but the scheme I was thinking of was the US Interceptor scheme, White with Blue/red, wouldn't be hard to do. Or something lairy (not pink obviously) but then I'm not lairy, so dunno...something different, OW01 scheme maybe!!

Personally I go for white 2k with sign writers vinyl for all other colours cause it's much easier to patch up after an opps, plus a good signwriter can do digital printing on the vinyl if you want a really funky bike.

You have gone from not wanting something that looks like a two year old did it, to a gp paddock factory paint scheme :poke
