Trans Swap

Here are some numbers that I have of the differences between the FZR1000 5 speed and the YZF750 6 speed (I do not know if it is a SP or R trans).

FZR1000 5 speed (Ratio spread 2.47)

1st --- 36 t ---- 14 t --- 2.57
2nd -- 32 t ---- 18 t --- 1.78
3rd -- 29 t ----- 21 t ---1.38
4th -- 27 t ----- 23 t ---1.17
5th -- 28 t ----- 27 t ---1.04

YZF750 6 speed (Ratio spread 2.373)

Anyone care to comment, as to what this means in the real word, to those of us that have no clue.

Yes, I know I'm going to be shifting a little more often, but what is it going to do to my final drive ratio? (17f, 49r) Will I see a significant change in rpm's?

if you can tell me how you came to these numbers, i can do the same and post the info for the sp tranny. i have one waiting to go in.

I counted each tooth on each gear on each shaft. I then matched each gear on one shaft to the corresponding gear on the other shaft. The order of gears in relation to actual gear being used was a little difficut to get my tiny little brain around, but I'm still thinking on it.

For the FZR 5 speed, working in from the clutch side of the input shaft, it goes 1st, 4th, 3rd, 5th, 2nd.

For the YZF 6 speed, working in from the clutch side of the input shaft, it goes 1st, 5th, 4th, 3rd, 6th, 2nd.

We test fitted the trans in a bare case and it spun nicely. Everything looks to be in good shape.

take output teeth divided by input teeth....gives gear ratio
The six spd is geared a tad shorter on the 2 thru 6 gears and the ratios are a little closer.

Yup.................
And the 1rst/2nd gear positions are inverse from the lables also Tim.
First is actually the closest to the clutch hub on the input shaft, second is all the way across towards the drive sprocket.

Alrighty..... I'm going down to the garage and start working on striping down the bike. Photos to follow.

Hey Tim, was just looking at your pics, looks good, and I saw those carbs waiting to swallow stuff ... thought I'd pass on a nice solution of 4 little soft toy balls that stuff in there with a perfect fit. Cheap too.

tim, yours looks almost as bare as mine.

i'll have to dig up some pics i have. the forks and triples came off recently. now to just drop the motor...

All I have left to do with the frame is figure out how to take the swingarm bearings out. Motor's going down to Elvis for disassembly on Sat. If luck is with me, I'll have it all back together by the end of the month.

ALL THAT AND SOME FOR 1 EXTRA GEAR. WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE IF U THINK ITS WORTH IT OR NOT. :poke

Of course it is going to be worth it, Willi. I was starting to have problems with 2nd popping out of gear, so I had to do something to repair it. If I can replace it AND get an extra gear for $150 (complete 6-speed trans), why would I pass it up?

How much oil was it burning and what`s the mileage on your bike?

Just a tad over 30K miles.

The only time that "I noticed that it burned oil" was on my trip to California. A 2800 mile trip and it needed about 1/2 liter, and that was about 1700 miles into the trip. Regular round town riding, it doesn't seem to be burning it.

I won't be getting any pics tomorrow, but I hope Bob does take time out to sanp a couple. Should be done by the weekend.
