drag racer, I double checked the size of the pilot jet and they are indeed Mikuni's 17.5. Remember this is a 97 YZF Thunderace, not an FZR, as best as I can tell. Also the spec sheet lists 17.5 pilot jets. I went to a Yamaha dealer ship and ran into a fellow who used to work at a Kawi dealership and after looking the needle up he thinks it may be a FP Titanium. FP is closed over the weekend, so I'll go over on Monday to check with them. I got a couple of pictures I am gone attempt to post, but they may big to big. If that is the case they I email them to whomever may have some feedback? I haven't figured out how to pull the emulsion tubes out yet. Any hint on how to do that? Looking through the slide area doesn't make it obvious to me as id the emulsion tubes are ovalized or not. Thanks for any feedback.

Wow that's small for a pilot jet on a 1k... The emulsion tube comes out the top. but you have to undo it from the float bowl side. remove the plastic insert from the top and the emulsion tube will come out the top. Carefull not to hurt the gasket under that ally block the emulsion tube came out of.... Jim <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... OK here is the scoop on that flat spot. One of the needle was bent as seen in the picture. It turns out these needles are dynojet's brand. How can you tell? they have 6 slots, and the FP only have 5 slots. So said the fellow at FP. I ended up by buying a new jet kit and it sure solved my flat spot, which really was an engine running on 3 cylinders above idle and up to 2Krpms when the vacuum slide would un-stick itself. I also had a slight surge issue under closed throttle like coming to a stop, and that was probably the needle hanging open for a while longer than the other three. Any way tomorrow I go for a proper blast up the Coast Highway and will report on my various roll on checks to ensure the carbs are set up properly. Thank you all for helping out with suggestions and possible solutions. That is what a good board is all about. Watch out Vale and Colin here I come to Laguna... on my exup

well, my fueling issues are definitely solved. After installing a FP Super sport kit in the carbs, the bike runs from idle to red line like a champ. Here are the settings if any one ever needs them. Pilot jets 22.5, main jets 122.5 needles onthe second position from the top, mixture screws at 3.5 turns out from lightly seated. Stock air filter and Yoshimura slip on.The bike no longer shudders nor back fires. It is now one very sweet in line four. See you all at Laguna EXUP Bros.

NorCalRyda, I am in SF and tomorrow I am gone go up the PCH as in North if the GG.It will be very hot everywhere else, but the coast should be great.

I went to Marin today, through the GG... and up Mount Tam to Marshal and inland to 101 through Nicasio Valley road and back. I really like this YZF. I ride an Aprilia miller in Europe but It feels as if the YZF transitions quicker from side to side. Must have a lower center of gravity. It is quicker, 150 on the same stretch where the RSVR used to hit 140. One area where the YZF falters is suspension compliance. Too much high speed compression damping. But what do you expect? The ohlins aren't expensive for no reason. The Michelin Powers seem to compliment the bike quiet well. The rear seems to spin a little when you gun it around 7Krpm while leaned over. It could use a little more grunt between 3 and 5Krpm, but I might be spoiled with the twin. All in all a Kick A-- bike. I'll miss it when I go back to Europe in early September. 100 horsepower limit in France. Whinnies!

How do the factory pro needles compare to the oem needles? Are they simular in profile?I figure the US needles is not adjustable? I might want to play with my carbs a bit,I've noticed a bit of hesitation in the midrange around6K. Otherwise It runs pretty good a bit leam at idle and I will install the pilot jets 22.5's instead of the oem 17.5's I noticed you went down in size on the main jets as well. Just want to mention that the needles are adjustable on the canadian model. Mike

Hmmmm....Even with the difference in models, I'd think the pilots would be closer. But I DO have a tendency to forget that Yamaha made anything except FZR's. FYI - the Tace uses a different set of carbs than the FZR, which would explain the different pilot jets. I know because I have a set that I bought with the intent of mounting on my 87, but they would require much more work than the 91-95, so I went with that.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/smokin.gif ALT=":smokin">
