Re: Hot in town???

I wonder if you have a case of a crack or porosity in magnesium castings or maybe in the iron liner. Have you had a cooling system pressure test done? They pump it up and check over time for a pressure decay. I would hold off on the double core radiator. You might be throwing good money at the wrong...

Re: Hot in town???

Question 1 - is it a stock head gasket? If not, replace it with the stock head gasket.

Question 2 - Did you scrape the gasket surface when it was apart? If you did, and you had a stock gasket, You probably put a small scratch in the head. Its very sensitive to scratches. You'll need to get i...

Re: hone or rebore ???????

If your bore checks in to the wear limits listed in your yamaha shop manual, then just hone and rering it. These bores will always have a slight amount of scoring from the break in; its no big deal. Its important to make sure the cylinder is not out of round beyond factory specs, or it will allways ...

Re: Oil consumption to high ?????

Dr Fox is right, the bores need honing everytime the motor comes apart. The rings have worn in and fit a certain way which you will never duplicate after disassembly. Your email sounds as if you reused the rings and if that is the case, you need to pull off the jug and rering it.

Re: more on the magical air box

The thread is from 4/12/02. The info is tailored to the 87 model. The first year model had a smallish intake snorkel and round filter element. I took the yzf750 parts which had greater cross sectional area and an oval filter element and adapted them to my bike. If you have a newer model, The snokel ...

Re: more on the magical air box

Yes, but its not the stock one. I posted the details of my mods earlier. I just finally settled on jetting that seems to be a good compromise for temp and barometrics pressure variations. A quick way to a performance gain is to make a thermal barrier that keeps the hot air from the intake. You could...

Re: more on the magical air box

bikeazoid,

The airbox does offer some restriction under high flow conditions so you lose a little on top with the stock airbox. I have an 87 with the airbox. I have also ridden a couple without one and I can attest that there is a little more top end oomph without one. Under 8000 rpm, its a d...

Re: engine

a big bore kit is available which bumps it up to 1029cc. It leaves the walls of the cylinders very thin so they distort a little under combustion pressures and therefore you will consume more oil than stock. Stay away from cometic head gaskets. Let me repeat that again. Save yourself lots of grief a...

cool air intake

yamaha has for the most part been resistant to join in the ram air intake set up. This in it self is not really a short coming since streets don't lend themselves to top speed blasts. Ram air systems have the benefit of being cold air induction systems. The performance of a non ram bike seems very d...
